The first introduction of a system to permanently reduce hair using laser technology surfaced in the late 1990s. At that time, laser hair removal treatments were limited to individuals with Types 1-3 skin tones (fair to light complexion). Today, modern technology has advanced and reinvented the possibilities to providing permanent hair reduction to those categorized as Types 4-5 (medium to darker complexion) with outstanding results. My previous experience with the Diode Lightsheer system is what initiated me to return to performing laser hair removal. Four years ago the Diode was known to provide the most effective outcome in hair reduction reported by my patients. It remains the gold standard of laser systems.

As a nurse practitioner in family medicine, patient safety is priority. In addition to patient education during initial consultation, SCMS promotes patient safety with "good faith" exams. Every potential patient will personally meet with a nationally certified nurse practitioner, who then completes a thorough medical history, assesses skin type, explains the risks and benefits of treatments and educates on pre/post laser care. Patients can expect to be provided with pertinent information before making an appointment for the initial treatment.

The laser hair removal procedure is considered painless compared to other methods and is safe when performed properly. It can be performed virtually on any areas except regions adjacent to eyes. Patients are offered anesthetic lidocaine and are provided with non-pharmacologic aides to promote a comfortable environment during sessions. During treatments, a built in cooling system removes heat expelled through the laser from the surface of the skin assisting in patient comfort level. All clinicians performing the treatments are certified through Lumenis and utilize the "quadrant technique" which divides large regions such as a full back into smaller parts preventing missed areas. Settings are gradually increased with each treatment in anticipation that body hairs are reduced in quantity and thinner in texture. The speed of each treatment in combination with optimal hair reduction with each session promotes patient satisfaction as evidence by high percentage of referrals. Patients have personally reported increased confidence levels, cost effectiveness by eliminating multiple shaving products and/or waxing appointments and decreased episodes of folliculitis (infection of hair follicles due to shaving) merely from permanently reducing body hair.
